After surgery – When to call your surgeon
I am going to mention reasons to call your surgeon after surgery, because after a couple of weeks, you are going to find out how good you’re healing process is.
If anyone of this mentioned things down below has appeared, contact your surgeon.
- You incisions start bleeding.
- You are starting to bruise easily.
- You notice tarry or dark (bloody) stools.
- You have difficulty breathing.
- You can not keep food/fluids down.
- You are having severe pain.
- You get a fever of 101 Fahrenheit or higher.
Things you can do to prevent difficulties.
Do not drink calories. Your caloric intake should be reduced after surgery.
This will help you lose weight. Do not try to drink liquid calories, this will
slow down your weight loss, this wont even provide nutrition.
Make your calories count when eating protein, fruits and vegetables.
Don’t eat sugar. Sugar is nothing but only empty calories.
Eating sugar will cause hunger pangs, sugar climbs, no nutrition and for some gastric bypass this will cause dumping syndrome. All foods that has the ingredient in the top 3 list of ingredients, you should avoid.
Avoid drinking fluids, immediately after, during or before your meal.
It is important, because if you drink fluids before and during your meal, you don’t save the little room you have in your stomach for food that contains a lot of nutrient. And drinking after, might wash away the food you have in your stomach and make you feel hungry again. You should separate food and fluids with about 30 minutes.
Follow-up visits, is important. After surgery, you will be closely monitored. If you skip appointments complications with nutrients or surgical errors will be discovered later, instead of sooner.
Keeping your appointments also helps you get motivated for your goals.
Always keep taking your medications. Never stop taking medications without your surgeons or doctors approval. Talk to your physician prior about stop taking medicines.
Avoid “snacking”, eating snacks is a bad habit that will slow down your weight loss. Always avoid junk food and eat quality meals.
Protein. Can’t say it enough! Protein should be your main
primary to focus on when eating meals. Protein will not only
maintain your muscle mass, but also make you feel full for a longer time after eating your meal.
No alcohol! Alcohol is full of empty calories. And it contributes to stomach ulcers, witch you are already in risk of after surgery.
Also, after you have been trough a weight-loss-surgery, you are more sensitive to alcohol than you were before.
Chewing, and then chewing, and chew some more. You do not want to swallow bits that are the size of apples. Your body’s digestive system is having a lot harder to break the food down if you don’t chew enough.
Avoid pregnancy. The first 2 years after surgery, you should avoid having babies. It would be unhealthy to support a baby, and recovering from surgery, as well as losing weight. You would over load your body.
Drinks water. This will make you feel more energetic, it also makes you feel a but full, and your need to eat will drop a bit.
Paying for surgery is expensive. But it also differs from surgeon to surgeon.
