After surgery – When to call your surgeon

Filed under: Surgery — admin at 9:52 pm on Sunday, July 27, 2008

I am going to mention reasons to call your surgeon after surgery, because after a couple of weeks, you are going to find out how good you’re healing process is.

If anyone of this mentioned things down below has appeared, contact your surgeon.

  • You incisions start bleeding.
  • You are starting to bruise easily.
  • You notice tarry or dark (bloody) stools.
  • You have difficulty breathing.
  • You can not keep food/fluids down.
  • You are having severe pain.
  • You get a fever of 101 Fahrenheit or higher.

Things you can do to prevent difficulties.

Do not drink calories. Your caloric intake should be reduced after surgery.
This will help you lose weight. Do not try to drink liquid calories, this will
slow down your weight loss, this wont even provide nutrition.
Make your calories count when eating protein, fruits and vegetables.

Don’t eat sugar. Sugar is nothing but only empty calories.
Eating sugar will cause hunger pangs, sugar climbs, no nutrition and for some gastric bypass this will cause dumping syndrome. All foods that has the ingredient in the top 3 list of ingredients, you should avoid.

Avoid drinking fluids, immediately after, during or before your meal.
It is important, because if you drink fluids before and during your meal, you don’t save the little room you have in your stomach for food that contains a lot of nutrient. And drinking after, might wash away the food you have in your stomach and make you feel hungry again. You should separate food and fluids with about 30 minutes.

Follow-up visits, is important. After surgery, you will be closely monitored. If you skip appointments complications with nutrients or surgical errors will be discovered later, instead of sooner.
Keeping your appointments also helps you get motivated for your goals.

Always keep taking your medications. Never stop taking medications without your surgeons or doctors approval. Talk to your physician prior about stop taking medicines.

Avoid “snacking”, eating snacks is a bad habit that will slow down your weight loss. Always avoid junk food and eat quality meals.

Protein.
Can’t say it enough! Protein should be your main
primary to focus on when eating meals. Protein will not only
maintain your muscle mass, but also make you feel full for a longer time after eating your meal.

No alcohol! Alcohol is full of empty calories. And it contributes to stomach ulcers, witch you are already in risk of after surgery.
Also, after you have been trough a weight-loss-surgery, you are more sensitive to alcohol than you were before.

Chewing, and then chewing, and chew some more. You do not want to swallow bits that are the size of apples. Your body’s digestive system is having a lot harder to break the food down if you don’t chew enough.

Avoid pregnancy. The first 2 years after surgery, you should avoid having babies. It would be unhealthy to support a baby, and recovering from surgery, as well as losing weight. You would over load your body.

Drinks water. This will make you feel more energetic, it also makes you feel a but full, and your need to eat will drop a bit.

The risks of weight loss surgery.

If considering a weight loss surgery, you should first look at the risks. No idea to attempt it
if it almost means certain death. Some potential risks are minor, and some are greater and long term. I am first going to mention a couple of general risks, that applies to everybody.

1. Anesthesia

Often it accurse while being intubated , or inserting a breathing tube.
Anesthesia awareness is a very discussed topic all around the world.

This is a very rare state of mind. Nothing that you really need to worry about,
unless it happens. Malignant hyperthermia is when the patients body temperature
rise very fast and rapidly. People who has suffered from it before, is in a bigger risk
of having it during surgery, which is a big threat.

2. Over bleeding

Bleeding during surgery is expected. But bleeding to much might make a blood transplant necessary. This is a really serious problem, if you are a member of a religion that don’t allow blood transplant.

Other general risks:

  • Delayed healing after surgery.
  • Difficulty breathing after surgery.
  • Infections after Surgery.
  • And worst of all, Death Due to Surgery.

But there are other risks that you should not take for granted.

Anemia: Decrease your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.
Osteoporosis and Bone Degeneration:
Not enough calcium and your boned will be weakened.
Excess Skin: When losing weight quickly, excess skin is very common.
Migration: This is also a common side effect of surgery.

This is just some of the risks, I am highly recommending you to see a professional surgeon.

Vitamin tips

Normally you don’t really tip about eating vitamins during weight loss.
But there are 3 vitamins that may help you to lose weight more easier.
These 3 vitamins are Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

When wanting to lose weight Vitamin B is the most important of them 3.
Vitamin B increases your metabolism. When your metabolism is increased,
so are your digestion and ability to burn fat off your body.

Vitamin C is the next most important one. Vitamin C does not really
have an direct effect on you while being on a diet, but it is very important
for your health and immune system, unless you already are taking Vitamin C
supplements and eating fruits and vegetables, you don’t need to worry about this.

Final one is Vitamin A, this is an oil-soluble vitamin, so excess Vitamin A often remains in your body.
This is a good thing because people don’t eat enough Vitamin A.
Signs of not eating enough Vitamin A is skin problems and bad night vision.
Natural sources of Vitamin A is cream, butter and milk(!). Witch in most diets,
are not allowed because this is main source of fat. When eating Vitamin A supplements
read label carefully. Most supplements can have bad side effects and be toxic in
high concentrations.

Filed under: Health & Fitness, Weight Loss Facts — admin at 3:37 pm on Saturday, July 26, 2008

Myths about weight loss always seem to be around.
They exist on the web, in your email trash box and some magazines.
Often people who follow these myths harm themselves trying.
Down below i will mention the top 6 weight loss myths.

1. If i almost totally stop eating calories, ill lose weight faster.

When you stop eating calories, your body go into starvation mode.
Your body want to maintain your weight because your body “thinks” that you are starving!
The bodys response is that it slows down your metabolism and you may not lose weight at all.

2. I should throw away all my favorite food that is not to healthy.

Think again! Giving yourself a treat when you really think you deserve it,
will keep you motivated. And more you will have a bigger succeed rate to achieve weight loss.
Just make sure that you dont go out of control when eating a treat.
This is the key to achieve weight loss for a long term.

3. Stricter the eating habits, more weight loss.

When you are more stricter about your diet, like cutting of some food groups
or just eating one food group, your diet wont work as well.
It will almost certainly end with you being sick on the one and only food
group you are allowed to eat, and you call it quits.

4. It is a bad idea to eat between meals.

Think again, eating some healthy snacks between meals will keep your
blood sugar and metabolism functioning well. This will also avoid you getting hungry
so you don’t eat to more than needed in the next meal.

5. Eating late will cause me gain weight

I does not matter WHEN you eat, what matters is how many calories you eat
and burn everyday. Whether you are eating at the evening or morning,
your body will turn the left over calories into fat. Some sources even say,
that eating some light snack before going to bed, like cheese or crackers,
will help you sleep. And sleeping is important for weight loss.

6. Fats are no good.

You need to include some fat in your diet, fat makes food more tasty and palatable.
There are even fats that are healthy and good for you. Two of those fats is the omega-3
fatty acids, wich are found predominantly in shellfish and fish, and monounsaturated fat that exists in olive oil.
